Hi everyone! This is a homework project for school, about what people from foreign countries think about hungarian language. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oT4CKxZWpegPlease watch this, I'm really interested in what you think. This is a hungarian poem (kindof), performed by a really famous actor, Imre Sinkovits. It's about how strange our language is, how similar some words are to eachother (it's a really funny thing by the way, you can hear the laughter during the video) The things I want to ask: What do you think, how does the language itself sound? Is there anything that you think you understand? As you can see the subtitles, can you follow it? What do you find different in the hungarian pronunciation, from your own language? If you have anthing else to add, I would be really happy to see it. Thanks in advance!

Ok, let's see...
I'm from Germany, and I've been in Miskolc once for a week with the school choir, and we were living in host families, so I had the chance to listen to the Hungarian language in daily use.
Now to the poem:
- I don't know how I can describe how the language sounds to me, it's just strange compared to other languages I can hear around me that are based on the Indo-Germanic or Roman language.
- I didn't understand anything to be honest, just think that he once mentions the city Miskolc, but I am not absolutely sure.
- I could follow the subtitels pretty well.
- As the German language has an ä, ö and ü I could see the difference between ö and the o with lines (?) above, see that the first is short and the second is long. This is what I noticed at once.
Hope this helps you a little bit!

I will try to help a little bit :)
What do you think, how does the language itself sound? I think it sounds very funny to by honest :) But.. do you really speak this way, how it is spoken in the video? From the beginning it sounded to be wittingly slowly and it was the funniest on it. Is there anything that you think you understand? No :D Was there something about birds? And I saw there the name of city Miskolc. As you can see the subtitles, can you follow it? Yes, I can, sometimes I get lost, but it´s OK :) What do you find different in the hungarian pronunciation, from your own language? Everything :D No... we just have other signs and ways how to change the pronunciation. S is š, gy is ď and so on. But we have é too :)
Hungarian is really interesting language, but I think that it´s difficult to learn (but although it, I would like to learn the basics, I´m just languages maniac :) ). And I often remember Riszálom ugyis-ugyis, which makes me smile everytime!

But this is how a poem should be performed, speed is very important. And no, there were no birds in it. :D (as far as I can remember.... XD) And yes, Miskolc was mentioned, with some other cities too. Miskolc on[b], Debrecen[b]ben, Győr ött these are 3 different appendages to say that you are in a city. And for a "non-hungarian" it's almost impossible to learn. (as there are some more too... XD) Thanks for your answers!
